Ceremonies and events were held across Canada on Thursday for the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a federal statutory holiday created to mark the history of Canadian treatment of Indigenous Peoples and the legacy of intergenerational trauma it has left. Chief R. Stacey Laforme of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, told a ceremony at the University of Toronto’s Massey College that he wrote a poem the day the Tk’emlups te Secwepemc Nation in Kamloops, B.C., announced that ground-penetrating radar had detected what are believed to be 215 graves. Ontario Premier Doug Ford also attended the ceremony, while Toronto Mayor John Tory spoke at an event with the Native Child & Family Services of Toronto. A walk was also held in Ottawa to honour the lives of children who were taken from their families as part of Canada’s residential school system, while Kúkpi7 Rosanne Casimi spoke from Kamloops, issuing a powerful call to action to Canadians and the Roman Catholic Church.
