Laura Belin recorded this video on January 27, 2026, as an Iowa House Health and Human Services subcommittee considered House Study Bill 501. This bill, proposed by Health and Human Services Committee chair Austin Harris, would replace all Iowa Code references to "pregnant person" with "pregnant female." Bill text: https://www.legis.iowa.gov/legislatio... During the subcommittee, representatives of One Iowa, Interfaith Alliance of Iowa Action Fund, and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Iowa opposed the bill as unnecessary and exclusionary. The Iowa Catholic Conference and one other individual spoke in favor of the bill. Republican State Representatives Devon Wood and Ann Meyer signed off on advancing the bill to the full committee. Democratic State Representative Timi Brown-Powers opposed the proposal, calling it a "waste of time." She wondered why the bill was brought forward. (Harris was among the few Republicans who voted against the 2025 bill stripping civil rights protections from transgender Iowans, so this bill could be a way for him to pander to GOP base voters, who insist "there are only two genders.")
