Women move mountains: artisans collaborate with fashion designer Stella Jean in the Peruvian Andes

Fashion designer Stella Jean travelled to Tolconi in the Peruvian Andes to work with the women artisans of Illiary Threads4Dreams. The women raise alpacas the traditional way, preserving the herd’s natural colour variations. However, industry trends prefer white fibre only, and the global alpaca market does not value the varied colours of natural alpaca fleece. In addition, due to the many intermediaries in the value chain, the women receive low prices for their raw material. Through the FAO’s Women’s Committee and the Italy-funded Mountain Partnership Products Initiative, Stella Jean worked with the women in Tolconi to create her newest fashion collection for 2023-2024 using multicoloured Alpaca fibre, bridging her knowledge of Italian design with their cultural legacy and heritage. These mountain women are now gaining a place in the international market and will produce and profit from the co-designed fashion items.
