West Virginia held a 38-35 lead over SEC champion Georgia with 1:38 left in the 2006 Sugar Bowl, held in Georgia's back yard at the Georgia Dome because of Hurricane Katrina. The Mountaineers had jumped to a 28-0 lead early in the game, but Georgia had come roaring back in the second half, and the WVU squad was out of gas and unable to stop the potent Bulldog offense. With time running out in the fourth quarter and Georgia poised to get the ball back on a 4th-and-7 and plenty of time on the clock, WVU coach Rich Rodriguez went for broke with a fake punt call that punter Phil Brady ran to perfection and a first down. WVU was able to run out the clock and get their first-ever BCS bowl win.
