Police pulled over a rented U-Haul truck for a traffic violation and immediately noticed the driver smoking weed inside the cabin. The man explained that he was moving from Oklahoma to Pennsylvania (despite being a New York resident), which he claimed was the reason for renting the truck. His biggest mistake was agreeing to let officers search the vehicle (drivers can legally decline a search request). When police tried to open the back, they struggled with an unusually thick lock before finally cutting it off. Inside, they discovered more than 700 pounds of marijuana. For perspective, the legal limit for personal possession is only 2.5 ounces—definitely not a truckload. The driver was arrested and charged with felony drug trafficking and possession. He was released on $150,000 bail, posted by a bail bondsman, but has reportedly been on the run ever since. The court has since ordered the bond company to either pay the $150,000 or bring him back to court, and the company is currently asking for more time.
