2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season Animation

The 2024 hurricane season, while not meeting up to its initial extreme forecast, will go down in history not for its activity, but for the damages and deaths we endured this season. What has become the second-costliest Atlantic hurricane season ever, mostly helped by a number of historic storms this season. Beryl, which first broke the record as the earliest Category 4 and 5 hurricane, decimating islands in the Lesser Antilles, went onto strike Texas as a Category 1, becoming rather costly and killing a total of 44 people there alone. Debby, striking Florida and the East Coast in August caused major flooding whilst doing over $12 billion in damages, it also became the costliest tropical cyclone on record for Canada. Helene, which has a very real chance to become the costliest tropical cyclone ever, surpassing Harvey and Katrina, struck Florida in late September, and would push inland, causing historic flooding in areas of South Carolina and especially Western North Carolina. Helene overall would kill 235, as of 12/23/24, while causing $124 billion in damages, a short ways off from the all-time record. Lastly, Milton would become the fifth-strongest hurricane ever in the basin, being the strongest Gulf hurricane since Rita and most intense in the Atlantic since Wilma, peaking at 897mbars. Just two weeks after Helene, Milton would also strike Florida, hitting Central Florida head on, killing 35, and causing over $85 billion in damages.
