http://bbh.marpirc.net/chimerabeast Chimera Beast is a Jaleco arcade shoot-em-up that was developed in 1993, but was never officially released in arcades. Practically nobody knew of the game's existence until the game's roms were dumped and made playable in emulators. The game is a strange horizontal shooter where instead of being a traditional spaceship, you're an alien being called an "Eater" that can somehow duplicate parts of creatures' DNA by... well, detaching its mouth and eating them. By eating enemies your Eater mutates and gains new powerups and attacks, until you take damage and lose them. Each level brings about a new class of enemies, until the end where you face off with an even more advanced Eater. Honestly, my favorite part of the game is the unconventional approach to the way the game ends. There are two endings - by beating the last boss (which happens in this video) you actually get the BAD ending, to get the good ending you actually have to die or time out versus the last boss. The bad ending is one of my favorite endings ever in a video game - it literally sent chills down my spine the first time I saw it. Such an awesomely fitting ending to such a unique game. I made this video in appreciation of the recent @Chimerabeast account on twitter. One of the designers has been sharing cool things like concept art and design documents about the game, and has even made the actual game playable to the public at the Mikado arcade in Tokyo, Japan. It may have taken 20 years, but it is great to see the game finally getting some attention. Follow them on twitter! / chimerabeast This video is not my best score - the score counter actually maxes out at 99,999,999, but I can't playback my old MAME replay of it since Windows 7 hates really old versions of MAME. I may attempt to do it again just for fun, I mainly need to work on the human eating bug on stage 6, you can rack up a large "eat" bonus at one part in the level where the stage stops scrolling, but you can't stall too long or you miss out on an even bigger bonus. "And you'll have to live with the knowledge that what led them there was.... you."
