Writing About It as a Child: The Story of Holocaust Survivor and Author Uri Orlev

An animated film for students in grades 5-7 that depicts the story of author and Holocaust survivor Uri Orlev. Uri Orlev was born in 1931 in Warsaw. Following the outbreak of World War II, Orlev and his family were sent to the Warsaw ghetto along with the rest of the Warsaw's Jews. To help cope with the harsh reality of life in the ghetto, Uri and his brother would make up imaginary stories. Later, Orlev's mother fell ill and was murdered by the Germans along with the rest of the ghetto hospital inmates. After their mother's death, Orlev and his brother's aunt, Stefa, managed to get them out of the ghetto to the Polish part of Warsaw. They were later hidden in a dark basement in a village for many weeks. Eventually, in 1943, Uri, his brother, and their aunt Stefa were sent to the Bergen-Belsen camp until liberation. After a long journey, the two brothers arrived in Israel, where they were sent to Kibbutz Ginegar. Uri married Yaara, and the two raised four children. Uri became an author, publishing many books, including children's books – "The Thing in the Dark", "Granny Knits", "The Lead Soldiers" and many more. The film was made in collaboration with the Israeli Ministry of Education. Hebrew with English captions, 2024.
