In this video you can understand how fast you’re spinning around the rotational axis of earth right now. Also, you will learn how to calculate the rotational speed of earth surface at a point near its equator and what will happen to the speed if we move away from equator i.e. towards North or South pole. Important Points and calculations related to earth rotation: Equatorial radius of earth = 6371 km Circumference of earth at equator = 40,075 km Since, Earth rotates from West to East, the Moon and Sun appear to move from East to West Solar day = 24 hr (A solar day is the time it takes for the Earth to rotate about its axis so that the Sun appears in the same position in the sky). Sidereal day = 23 hours 56 minutes and 4.091 seconds ( ~4 minutes shorter than the solar day. The sidereal day is the time it takes for the Earth to complete one rotation about its axis with respect to the 'fixed' stars.) Rotational Speed of earth about its axis: Earth's spin is constant, but the speed depends on what latitude you are located at. If we take any point on the equator of earth, circumference (distance around the largest part of the Earth) is roughly 24,898 miles (40,070 kilometers). If you Solar day, it is 24 hours long (It is the time taken the earth to complete its rotation about its axis). We know, Speed = Distance travelled divided by time taken. So, divide the circumference by the length of the day. This produces a speed at the equator of about 1,037 mph (1,670 km/h or roughly 0.5 km/sec.) Wow! It’s too fast and you don’t even feel it. *******You are welcome to our YouTube educational/edutainment channel******** Hi, I’m JP Brar !
