Monte Cristo, Junee Australia’s Most Haunted House In the Beginning, the Crawleys (Christopher and Elizabeth) lived in a small 1876 built brick cottage which still exists to this day behind the main house. The main house construction begun in 1884. Both Mr & Mrs Crawley died in the house. Christopher died in 1910 from heart failure and blood poisoning from a carbuncle on his neck which became infected. After her husband’s death Elizabeth became a recluse locking herself in the house rarely leaving. Elizabeth died 23 years later in 1933 due to a burst appendix. The last of the Crawley family left the house in 1948 where it laid abandoned and eventually vandalised as caretakers couldn’t stop it. Monte Cristo laid in this state for over a decade. In 1963 Monte Cristo was purchased by Reginald and Olive Ryan who over many decades lovingly restored the abandoned shell of Monte Cristo to its former glory. When the Ryans moved into the homestead they noticed something wasn’t quite right when various things started to happen. Ranging from pets not wanting to go anywhere near the homestead to lights turning on and off by themselves. The homestead hadn’t always had a great past though, i mean you don’t get the title of Australia’s Most Haunted House for nothing right? There are several ghosts that live within Monte Cristo which have been seen and felt by many people. The ghosts of Mr and Mrs Crawley. A maid who died instantly by jumping from the balcony. A stable boy named Morris who was burned alive in the coach house where you can still hear screams to this day. Ethel Crawley who was the granddaughter of Christopher and Elizabeth who died after being dropped on the stairs by the nursemaid. Then we have Jack Simpson, a caretaker at Monte Cristo who was shot dead on the porch in 1960 by a young man. This young man repeatedly watched Alfred Hitchcocks Psycho before committing this act. The words “Die Jack HA HA” can vaguely be seen on the door of the dairy room today. Many visitors at Monte Cristo have experienced ghostly activity such as guests feeling nausea, overwhelming sadness, some guests even feel faint during their visit. Disembodied whispers, unexplained mists, orbs and poltergeist activity can be seen, felt and heard in and around the house. Monte Cristo has been featured on a number of TV Shows such as Ghost Hunters International, Scream Test, and My Ghost Story. Owners live in the homestead so if you want to visit you can do so every Saturday, Sunday and Public Holiday. It costs $15 to get in and also has a gift shop too.
