2023 Emergency Medicine Evaluation and Management Code Updates: Implications for Point-of-Care Ultrasound Billing (AEUS and AAAEM Sponsored) Presenters: Christopher Thom, MD, RDMS Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to: -Demonstrate understanding of the 2023 Emergency Medicine E/M coding change on POCUS billing specifically. -Describe when POCUS billing will likely occur and likely not occur within the 2023 E/M coding landscape. -List specific mitigation strategies to keep POCUS billing a functional and vibrant part of the POCUS landscape -Describe the importance of this topic for POCUS educators, particularly those involved in fellowship education. On January 1, 2023, Emergency Medicine (EM) will have embarked on a once in a generation coding and billing transition. This involves a change in the determination of our Emergency Medicine Evaluation and Management (E/M) codes (1 through 5) to be reliant on medical decision making (MDM) elements only. There is likely to be a defined impact of this on Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) billing. While we do not practice POCUS for billing revenue, it is wise to be cognizant of the influence of POCUS billing on the overall success of POCUS in our specialty and within our individual programs. The discussion will be targeted at POCUS-specific billing implications of the 2023 EM E/M code billing changes. We will review how POCUS billing occurred in 2022 and previously and then discuss the impact of the 2023 changes. This will include an overview of how the MDM determinations are impacted by whether a POCUS was performed and how POCUS billing is no longer permissible as a separate procedure if it is being drawn into the MDM determination. Case examples will be utilized to demonstrate specific scenarios where POCUS may not be billable as a separate procedure and where POCUS will likely still be billable as a separate procedure within the 2023 framework.
