The preferred anesthesia for elective Cesarean Section is spinal anesthesia. The process starts when the patient comes to meet the anesthetist for assessment . Few routine investigations are assessed . The patient comes fasting on the day of surgery for a minimum of 6 hours. Regular medicines which the patient is taking can be tank with sips of water on the day of surgery. Once the patient comes to the OT, then the patient is attached few monitors like ECG, blood pressure monitor, a small monitor which goes on the finger of the patient, that is pulse oximeter . Once the monitors are attached, the iv line is started and the IV fluids are started for the patient . Then the patient is made to sit on the OT table and the patient is asked to give a specific position so as to bend the back the back is cleansed with an antiseptic solution, a local anesthetic is given to numb the skin, where the spinal is to be given. spinal is given with a very fine needle and the drug is injected. Once the drug is injected, the patient is made to lie down. Now the patient starts feeling numbness in both the legs it takes atleast 5 to 20 minutes for the anesthesia to set in and the surgery is not started until the anesthesia is confirmed she can hear the baby’s first cry, see the baby and at the same time also breast feed the baby within 15 to 20 minutes after the delivery is done. Mother can communicate with the doctors and also she can talk to her relatives, once she is out of the operation theater after the procedure.
