Faisalabad is an industrial city in the Punjab province of Pakistan, a textile hub, the third largest city in Pakistan after Karachi and Lahore. Innumerable people left the villages and migrated to the cities in search of better facilities of life and this process continues till now. The city currently has a population of 35,42,000. According to the 1998 census, 46 percent of the population is below 15 years of age, 52 percent is between 15 to 64 years of age, and the remaining 2 percent is above 65 years of age. Population ratio per square kilometer is 9,594,The present Faisalabad district used to be a part of Gujranwala, Jhang and Sahiwal in the early nineteenth century. Caravans going from Jhang to Lahore used to halt here. The British tourists of that time wanted to make it a city. In early times it was called Chenab Canal Colony, which later came to be called Lyallpur after Lt. Gen. Sir James B. Lyall, Governor of Punjab. Faisalabad's main feature is the city centre, which consists of a rectangular area, within which the addition and multiplication forms divide it into 8 sections. In the middle of it stands the famous Clock Tower, where all the eight roads meet. The eight streets meeting at the clock tower are the eight main markets of the city, due to which it is also called the city of eight markets.
