(7 Dec 2007) SHOTLIST 1. Wide shot of Nairobi Hospital 2. Close of sign board 3. Pan of Somali president's hospital room set up for news conference 4. SOUNDBITE: (English) Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, President of Somalia: "For the last thirteen years, I am carrying this liver, transplanted liver, and it is healthy, like your liver." (Reporter: "How are you feeling Mr President?") "Very nice. You see Dr Saio beside me, when I came here, as Dr Saio told you, I had not serious bronchitis. So in four days in this hospital, they cured me and my health is absolutely perfect. But as he said, every year I go to London for my annual medical check up to the hospital which did my transplant - Cromwell Hospital. So I was on my way to London when I came to my doctor and he found me with this little bronchitis. This is why I stayed here for four days. Now I am finished and soon I will go to London." 5. SOUNDBITE: (English) Dr Mauro Saio, Doctor for President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed: "I must say that the response to treatment has been very satisfactory. He could leave today if he wanted. But as I said there is no point of going to London over the weekend because no doctor will work." 6. SOUNDBITE: (English) Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, President of Somalia: "Do you remember how many times journalists who are liars went and told the whole world I was already dead? Three times. When I was watching the television, the news came: 'the president of Somalia, Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, already died.' You see me. Many of you know me. I am Abdullahi Yusuf and I am healthy." 7. Wide of news conference STORYLINE: Somalia's president said on Friday that he was healthy and not suffering from any complications from a liver transplant, in his first comments since being rushed to the hospital three days ago. Contradictory reports have been swirling about the condition of 73-year-old Abdullahi Yusuf, who has had chronic health problems for years and received a new liver in 1996. While Somali officials have said Yusuf was suffering from a cold, other officials and the president himself said he had bronchitis. Concerns about his health problems were creating more uncertainty for his volatile country, where Yusuf's weak government is battling an Islamic insurgency. "I am Abdullahi Yusuf and I am healthy," said the president, who looked tired and was sitting on a couch, told reporters at Nairobi Hospital. "For the last thirteen years, I am carrying this liver, transplanted liver and it is healthy, like your liver." Yusuf was expected to fly to Britain in the coming days for a regular check-up on his liver. "He could leave today if he wanted," Yusuf's doctor, Dr Mauro Saio, said. Yusuf's homeland faces what the United Nations says is the biggest humanitarian crisis in Africa. Somalia has not had a functioning government since warlords overthrew a dictator in 1991, then turned on one another. Yusuf's government was formed in 2004 with the support of the UN, but has struggled to assert any real control.
