https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scolagr... R. Yeshayahu di Trani, known as the Rid, was one of the greatest Italian rabbis of the 13th century — a bridge between the French Tosafists and the world of Italian Jewry. Though he lived about a century after Rabbenu Tam, he inherited the Tosafist tradition through indirect channels. He likely studied under Italian pupils or correspondents of the German Tosafist R. Simḥah of Speyer, part of the broader Kalonymus network that linked the yeshivot of Mainz and Lucca. From these teachers he absorbed the dialectical style of the Tosafists, yet in his writings he often chose clarity and reason over complexity, saying simply, “Ein tzorekh bekakh” — “There is no need for all this.” In this way, Yeshayahu of Trani became the voice of a uniquely Italian Tosafist school, grounded in logic, humility, and moral sense.
