This black and white film is one of a 1950-1960 television series Industry on Parade, produced by the National Association of Manufacturers. This episode, “The Golden Years”, is a single segment highlight that the elderly are still productive employees. An elderly gentleman checks in with the receptionist at the doctor’s office. The doctor wears a bowtie and suit and draws the patient’s blood (:18-:57). At Upjohn, a female lab technician works with vials in research on cortisol. The results are output on dot-matrix continuous form paper. A male technician tests plants in a chemical analysis machine. In the lab, baby chicks eat from a feeder and are measured and weighed for research. Samples are put into a spectrophotometer. Pills are manufactured in trays (:58-2:33). Elderly craftsmen are shown: one uses an axe and hammer to split wood for shingles; Charles Kelly carves a violin out of curly maple; and another makes a saddle (2:34-3:50). George W. Borg, inventor of the automobile clutch in 1910, works on another invention of his—a machine that produces synthetic fur. Large machines produce synthetic fur at the Borg Textile Corporation (3:51-5:00). Industrialist Charles Schlegel, in his 90s, hoes in his newly planted orchard. The inside of the Schlegel factory is shown, with automatic looms in production (5:01-5:53). An elderly man rakes leaves. His elderly wife brings him a suit jacket and he leaves for work (5:54-6:24). An older worker wearing a hard hat is shown at a Sun Oil refinery. A worker picks up his check. Women work at manual typewriters. One is handed a stock certificate (6:25-7:06). An Allis-Chalmers company counselor speaks with an elderly gentleman in a room filled with men working at desks. Male retirees meet for coffee, conversation, and cards (7:07-8:00). An elderly gentleman works in a greenhouse to cross-breed roses. He transfers pollen and wraps the flower shut (8:01-8:34). An elderly woman, Mrs. Anna Clopton, paints on cobwebs. Her finished artwork is shown (8:35-9:26). At the Gertrude Frank Pick Children’s Center, retirees show a film to hospitalized children (9:27-9:52). A 1940s Plymouth passes the Schenectady Savings Bank. A group of men over 65 wait in line and enter the bank. They are part of the Mohawk Development Service, shown working at drafting tables (9:53-10:29). Children play outside a one-room schoolhouse. An elderly female teacher rings a hand bell and the children line up. A couple of Boy Scouts are in uniform as they enter the school (10:30-10:58). The Childhood Interests toy factory employs elderly women and men to hand-make toys. A cake commemorating a worker’s 80th birthday is wheeled in on a cart (10:59-12:26). A grandmother teaches her young granddaughter how to play the xylophone (12:27-12:48).
