#jnu #modi #kanhaiyakumar #news The Vice Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University has rusticated all four office bearers of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union for leading a protest march against the installation of Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) systems on campus. During the protest, students uprooted the devices that had been installed. In this interview, Gopika, Vice President of JNUSU, explains why the union strongly opposes the introduction of facial recognition systems. She argues that the administration failed to provide clear answers about data storage, surveillance safeguards, and students’ right to privacy. According to the union, these machines were installed under the guise of facilitating student elections and notably in the presence of police personnel raising serious concerns about coercion and intimidation on campus. The administration had previously issued a notice assuring that the status quo would be maintained. However, despite this assurance, the devices were installed. Gopika states that when repeated attempts at dialogue failed, the union felt it had no choice but to physically remove the systems. She also speaks about the personal toll of rustication — how difficult it has been for union members who now face academic and personal uncertainty for their involvement in campus politics. She calls upon students and progressive voices across the country to come together in defence of the idea of JNU as a democratic and dissenting space. Watch the full interview. Share and amplify.
