Turning Seawater Brine Into Opportunity in Tenerife

The European project Sea4Value aims to recover valuable minerals and metals from desalination #brine. Advanced extraction technologies are being tested in a moving lab at the La Caleta #desalination plant in Tenerife, where Aqualia produces drinking water from seawater. Desalination is energy-intensive and costly, and the water produced needs to be remineralised before its safe to drink it. Sea4Value’s innovations focus on extracting minerals like calcium and magnesium from the brine, which have industrial value. These efforts could enhance the sustainability and efficiency of desalination, paving the way for more eco-friendly and cost-effective processes.
