Murder Inc. Records and Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff Queens THIS STORY BEGINS WITH TWO INDIVIDUALS who came from similar backgrounds but different platforms. One is a former drug kingpin who in the mid to late ’80s ruled the crack cocaine trade in Jamaica, Queens, and left his reputation etched in stone throughout New York City. The other was an aspiring DJ who studied under Run-DMC and became a DJ himself as well as a producer, a studio engineer, an A&R for Def Jam Music Group, and a label owner. There are many stories told about the Supreme–Murder Inc. rise. A false one is that Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff was involved in Irv Gotti's rise—that was all Irv's doing. The media has insinuated that Murder Inc. was funded by Supreme's drug money and was the prime mover the Murder Inc.–G Unit beef, but it was Supreme's situation that led to the fall of Irv and Murder Inc. Records. Irv's loyalty caused his undoing. Irv's story is interesting. He grew up around hip-hop legends and ran around with a street legend, but it was the talent—as a DJ, producer, studio engineer, and talent scout—that led to his success in the music and entertainment business. His connections to street cats came along because of his talent. “Irv Gotti is tied to three major dudes/outlets in this story,” said Queens native Shakim Bio. “His connection to Kenneth ‘Supreme McGriff’—of the legendary Supreme Team—along with his ties to Jay-Z . . . and his connection to Darrin ‘Dee’ Dean of the Ruff Ryder camp were essential to his success.” “Irv played a big part in ventures with these connections. His story is unique because it's a story that has not been told correctly until now. Instead of highlighting his success and many accomplishments, the story told about Irv Gotti was one that gave him a ‘black eye in the game’ or made him look bad amongst his peers.”
