The video presents the entry into service of the first Airbus A330 MRTT (Multi Role Tanker Transport) for the Spanish Air Force, which was acquired to enhance aerial refueling and transport capabilities. This aircraft, which will operate from Torrejón de Ardoz Air Base in Madrid, stands out for its interoperability with allied nations and its strategic autonomy. Furthermore, it is equipped with advanced refueling technology and can be configured for medical evacuation missions, thus increasing the operational capacity of the Spanish armed forces. The European manufacturer delivered the first of the three planned aircraft this Friday at its Getafe plant (Madrid), where the transformation is taking place. It should be noted that this is not an aircraft designed from the outset for this purpose, but rather an aircraft that, like the other two about to be delivered, had a role in Iberia's commercial fleet. When it comes to carrying out prolonged air operations, refueling aircraft are crucial. They allow fighters and other aircraft to stay in the air longer and carry out their missions without interruption. The arrival of the first Airbus A330 MRTT has improved the readiness of the Naval Air Forces for this type of task. A little over three years ago, the Spanish airline and the Ministry of Defense established an agreement to transfer three Airbus A330s to be converted into tanker aircraft for the Naval Air Forces. Although the initial schedule called for delivery in 2023, there were delays in the conversion, and now we are beginning to see the benefits. From transporting passengers to refueling fighter jets. The agreement with Iberia covered more than just the transfer of the aircraft: it also included, among other elements, the training of pilots, flight crews, and technical personnel, as well as ongoing maintenance for a specified period. The training focused on members of the 45th Wing, based in Torrejón, which will be the destination of this first unit and the remaining two. María Ángeles Martí, who leads the Airbus Defence and Space Transport, Mission, and Air Refueling Programs, described this aircraft as “the most outstanding refueling aircraft in the world.” For her part, Amparo Valcarce, Secretary of State for Defense, highlighted that its incorporation represents “a contribution to the European pillar of defense.” The model received by the Air Force and Space Force is equipped with an in-flight refueling system that uses a hose and basket. It also features advanced innovations such as fly-by-wire control for the refueling boom and a high-resolution 2D/3D digital system that significantly improves visibility for operators during operations.
