At six, he started to study piano at the Korolev School of Arts and, at nine, was invited to continue his studies with Elena Kaminskaya at the Moscow College of Instrumental Performance. He twice won the school's competition, then the Moscow regional competition, and soon won a national award. Later, while at Moscow's Gnessin College of Music, he received top marks for his graduate piano performance exam and won the Jyvaskyla International Competition (Finland). He joined the classes of professors Mikhail Voskresensky and Eliso Virsaladze at the Moscow State Conservatory, graduating with bachelor's and master's degrees and highest honors in 2013. After moving to New York, he won the 3rd Gershwin International Music Competition (NYC), the Mauro Monopoli Competition Prize (Italy), the Bendetsky Russian Piano Competition, the IKIF's Dorothy MacKenzie Artist Recognition Scholarship Award (NYC), the Third International Stanislav Neuhaus Piano Competition (Russia), and the 20th-century composition performance prize of the New York Festival and Piano Competition. He also earned a Masters at Mannes (NYC). He is a passionate music teacher and the author of a series of educational concert-lectures for adults and children. These have met with considerable success in NYC and Boston. The late musicologist Allan Evans has said of Ivan Gusev, "He is a profound, genuine musician who makes each note live and transports you to another existence". ————————————— The mission of the The Frederick Collection of Historical Grand Pianos, ca. 1790-1928, is to acquaint musicians and the concert-going public with the sounds of pianos of the types, and often the makes, familiar to and played by the major composers. Begun in October 1985 by co-curators Michael and Patricia Frederick, Ashburnham, MA, these fall and spring Historical Piano Concerts feature standard piano, chamber, and vocal repertoire from the late 18th through the early 20th centuries. The series presents distinguished American and overseas musicians, many of whose names are familiar to our live and virtual audiences.
