It was introduced on June 1, 1930, by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, which was the forerunner of the Central Railway. The original purpose of the Deccan Queen was to ferry rich patrons from Bombay (now Mumbai) to Pune to attend horse races at the Pune Race Course. It was the first deluxe train in India and held several "firsts" to its credit: It was India's first superfast train. It was the first long-distance electric-hauled train. It was the first vestibuled train, meaning passengers could walk between coaches. It was the first train in India to have a "Ladies-Only" car. It was the first train to feature a dining car, a unique feature that it still retains today, offering table service and modern pantry facilities. It was also the first time coaches with roller bearings were introduced, and end-on-generation coaches were replaced with self-generating coaches with a 110-volt system. First and Second class Chair Cars were introduced for the first time. Initially, the Deccan Queen ran with two rakes of seven coaches each. One rake was painted silver with scarlet moldings, and the other was royal blue with gold lines. The underframes of these original coaches were built in England, while the coach bodies were constructed at the Matunga Workshop of the GIP Railway. Over the years, the train underwent several upgrades. In 1966, the original coaches were replaced by anti-telescopic steel-bodied integral coaches built by the Integral Coach Factory, Perambur, and the number of coaches increased to 12. In 1995, air brake rakes were introduced. In August 2021, a Vistadome coach was added, offering panoramic views of the Western Ghats. In June 2022, all conventional coaches were replaced with modern LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches under Project Utkrisht, bringing amenities like LED lighting, bio-toilets, and Braille signage. As of 2025, the Deccan Queen typically runs with 16 coaches. The Deccan Queen has always run on electric power, a notable distinction, and has rarely been hauled by diesel locomotives. Its route connects Mumbai and Pune, traversing the scenic Bhor Ghat section which includes numerous tunnels and viaducts. Historically, it did not use the reversing station at Bhor Ghat, which was abandoned after electrification. While generally known for its punctuality, there have been some notable incidents, such as a collision at Masjid Bunder station in December 1953. In 2017, a controversial decision to shift its departure from Platform 1 to Platform 5 at Pune station sparked protests among commuters, who consider the train a lifeline between the two cities. Despite challenges and the introduction of other modes of transport like the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, the Deccan Queen continues to be a beloved and iconic service, maintaining its reputation for consistent "right time start" and arrival.
