Last year, we planted our first backyard garden in long, in-ground rows… and while the harvest was incredible, the layout wasn’t working. We dealt with standing water, unclear walking paths, unruly tomatoes blocking access to the hose and chicken coop, and rows that were difficult to navigate once everything filled in. It was a huge learning experience — and a very successful one — but we knew this year needed a better design. So we redesigned our entire side yard. In this video, we’re building keyhole-style raised beds to transform our ¼-acre suburban lot into a more functional, intentional homestead space. These beds are: 🌻 12 inches deep for strong root growth 🌻 3 feet wide for easy reach 🌻 3-foot aisles to accommodate a wheelbarrow 🌻 A wider center path for airflow and access 🌻 Designed to maximize our south-facing light We’re also building a rainwater collection system that will allow us to automate irrigation and water at the roots — reducing waste and preventing disease like powdery mildew. This is just the beginning. The beds are built, but we still need to install hardware cloth, fill them, and plant for the season. If you’re interested in backyard gardening, small-lot homesteading, permaculture-inspired design, or thoughtful home improvement projects — you’re in the right place. You don’t need acreage to grow a lot of food. Subscribe to follow along as we continue building Little Kanuga Farm.
