In 1682, Temperance Lloyd, Mary Trembles and Susannah Edwards, from the town of Bideford in the South-West of England, were tried and hanged as witches. They were convicted on the flimsiest of evidence under the cynical eye of uncaring authorities. Their fate encapsulates the turmoil of the seventeenth century and its deadly consequences. Our guest today is John Callow, author of "The Last Witches of England" and friend of the podcast - check out John's previous appearance on our episode about the Pendle Witches. 0:00 - Whispers of Witchcraft in 17th Century Bideford 3:23 - Who Were The Last Witches of England? 9:21 - Why Poverty & Old Age Made Them Victims 16:42 - The "Evidence": How Witchcraft Was Proven 31:32 - The Judge's Secret: A Chillingly Cynical Verdict 38:21 - From Villains to Icons: The Legacy of The Bideford Witches Sign up to History Hit for hundreds of hours of original documentaries, with a new release every week and ad-free podcasts.
