Comparative adjectives... what are they? How do you use them? What are they all about? How can we compare different adjectives together? Comparative adjectives are used to compare 2+ things and are formed with +er or putting "more" or "less" before the adjective. Comparative adjectives with 1-2 syllables have +er added to them. James is tall. Jessica is taller. Tom is tallest. I am stronger than her. She is smaller than me. It is hotter than yesterday. A car is faster than a bicycle. A common mistake with "then" and "than" can be confused because they are similar, but not correct to use "then" to form a comparative. Jessica is taller THAN James = RIGHT Jessica is taller THEN James= WRONG Forming them, as some simply add +er and others are a little more complex. Adjective - Close +er, as it already has e. Closer. Early, as it already ends of y then it is removed and replaced with +ier. Big, as it ends consonant-vowel-consonant we double the last letter and +er A cat is bigger than a mouse My car is longer than yours. Morocco is hotter than England. Irregular comparatives, as some adjectives are completely different as they change. Good - better Bad- worse Far- farther The bank is father away then the train station. Jessica got a better result than yesterday Madrid is colder than Morocco. Comparatives with long adjectives as "than" is used when talking about adjectives with 2/3 syllables. The city is more beautiful than others. But we can also use "less" But this city is less exciting than the others. Subject + verb More/less Adjective Than Rest of sentences This city is More Adventurous Than The others. Less Spiders are more scary than wasps. This book is less exciting than the others. Running is more tiring than walking. This restaurant is more exotic than most. Two-form comparatives as some 2 syllable comparatives can either have "more"/"less" or be modified. My dogs are the friendliest dogs in the world. My dogs are more friendly than yours. The shop is narrow... ... more narrow than yours The server room is quiet... ... more quiet than most. Common mistake is when people use "more"/"less" and use a modified adjective: More friendly = RIGHT Friendlier = RIGHT More friendlier= WRONG It is either +er or "most" which modified the adjective, not both- depending on how many syllables the adjective are. Adjectives with modifiers, as they go before the comparative to make them stronger or weaker. • The tree is a lot... • ...much taller than me. Thus showing you how big the difference is. • The car is a bit... • ... slightly taller than me. Only a little difference between the two. The castle is much... ...far more grad than the church. "More"/"much" to talk about a big difference and how to highlight it. Common mistake: using very. The book is much thicker than the leaflet= RIGHT The book is very thicker than the leaflet = WRONG If you want to increase your English, expand your vocabulary and speak like a Native Englishman, then subscribe to the channel: / @englishwithadrian Check out the other playlists to learn more English Common English Mistakes: • Common English Mistakes English Speechcraft: • English Speechcraft Building English Sentences: • Building English Sentences Expand Your English Vocabulary: • Expand Your English Vocabulary Speak Native English: • Speak Native English Commonly Confused English Words: • Commonly Confused English Words English Tenses Explained: • English Tenses Explained English 101: • English 101 Follow me on Instagram: / adriannantchev Learn more and buy a useful book: https://amzn.to/2Xlcq7k
