Here’s a simple example. Suppose I tell you that a dog knows when its master is coming home because it smells the master’s scent drifting through the air. Fine. Sounds reasonable. But if I stop you and ask, how does the smell get from the street to the dog’s nose, what is it physically, what’s actually moving, suddenly things get foggy. Most explanations fall apart after the first sentence. That’s where memorization stops and learning should begin. Real learning starts when you get uncomfortable. When you say, “Wait a minute, I don’t actually know what’s going on here.” Most people hate that feeling. They rush to cover it up with more words. I love that feeling. That’s the edge of understanding. That’s where the fun is. Another example. Take a child with a wagon. You pull the wagon with a rope. The wagon moves. Why? You can say “because of force.” That sounds official. But force is just a word we invented to summarize what happens. It doesn’t push the wagon by magic. What’s really happening is that the rope is made of atoms, those atoms tug on the atoms in the wagon, and the wagon responds according to certain patterns we can measure and predict. Now we’re getting somewhere. Now we can ask better questions.
