Endometriosis of the Bowel. What you need to know when it comes to bowel endo surgery. Removal of bowel endo typically requires either a bowel shave – where superficial endo is found, by separating the endometriotic lesion from the colon or rectum by cutting it off without having to cut into the organ, Or a bowel resection – where endo has penetrated the bowel wall - the surgeon cuts out the affected part of the bowel & reconnects the healthy parts. Endo that’s developed inside the bowel can mean obstruction, potentially resulting in abdominal pain, constipation & bloating. One of the main risks with bowel resection surgery that you’re all probably aware of is the potential need for a temporary or permanent stoma. A stoma is an opening created in the tummy wall. A stoma bag is attached to the skin around the opening to collect faeces. And it has its own associated complications – skin problems, leaks, retraction, etc. Bowel fistula can also occur. This is labelled as an ‘abnormal connection’ between the bowel & another organ, following a bowel shave or segmental resection. A post-operative bowel leak, where bowel contents leak into the body, is another complication. This could be due to the resection stitches not healing properly. This typically requires a second surgery & potential need for a temporary stoma while the bowel heals. Symptoms include: fever, abdominal pain, nausea & vomiting. Finally, you may experience changes in bowel function following resection surgery. Changes can include: urgency, or difficulty emptying the bowel completely. It can take 8 weeks for bowel function to improve. Changes may be longer term. Be sure to keep your doctor informed.
