Mice were a great little indie pop band formed by ex-All About Eve lead singer Julianne Regan and ex-Powder bassist Tim McTighe. The band also included former Levitation guitarist Christian Hayes (AKA Bic), as well as ex-All About Eve drummer Mark Price. Marty Willson-Piper (guitar) and Andy Cousin (bass), also former All About Eve members, joined them in the studio, whilst Dominic Luckman (drums), Dave Woodman (guitar) and Ali Kane (keyboards) augmented their live band. They released three cracking singles ('Mat's Prozac', 'The Milkman' and 'Dear Sir') and just one album ('...Because I Can') for Permanent Records, before the label went bust. Mice split up soon thereafter, in 1997. Other acts signed to the Permanent label included The Fall, Hue & Cry and Dr. Robert. This track, 'Martian Man', appeared on the b-side of 'The Milkman' and it's a cover version. It was written and originally recorded by English singer-songwriter and producer, Lynsey de Paul. It's said the track was inspired by Wizard's Roy Wood, because he had green and red hair at the time. Lynsey's version was to be included on her 1976 album for Jet Records, 'Before You Go Tonight', but this was shelved at the time and not given a release until 1990, in Japan. Julianne and co. must've heard it in the intervening five years and liked it enough to record it themselves! It's the better version, too, with a Numan-esque synth menace to it. It was included on a 2001 re-package of the Mice album, 'New & improved', which was expanded to include b-sides and unreleased demos from the period, on the Jamtart label.
