Below are excerpts I gathered from the internet for those who want more details about the places we visited : Jerai Hill, Bujang Valley and Victoria Bridge. Jerai Hill Jerai Hill (Gunung Jerai), formerly Kedah Peak, is a mountain in Kedah, Malaysia, stands at 3,993 feet of 1217 metres, straddling border of Kuala Muda and Yan districts. Mount Jerai is a inselberg located near the coast of the Strait of Malacca, and is part of an eponymous geological formation that correlates with the Matchinchang formation in the island of Langkawi. There is an information board on top of the mountain stating that it used to be an island called Pulai Serai before sea levels receded letting it form a mountain. The summit of Jerai has been developed into a hill resort, and from there tourists can get to enjoy a wide angle view of the surrounding areas, including Penang Island and the rice fields of Yan District . Bujang Valley Bujang Valley (Lembah Bujang) is a sprawling historical complex and has an area of approximately 224 square kilometres (86 sq mi). Bujang Valley is situated near Merbok, Kedah, between the 1,217-metre high Mount Jerai (Gunung Jerai) in the north and Muda River (Sungai Muda) in the south. It is the richest archaeological area in Malaysia. With the discovery of ancient smelting sites in the Sungai Batu area, Bujang Valley settlement area has expanded to 1000 square kilometers or 390 square miles. Bujang Valley consists of ruins that may date to more than 1500 years old. More than 50 ancietn pagoda temples, called ‘candi’, have been unearthed. The most impressive and well preserved of these is located in Pengakalan Bujang Merbok. The Bujang Valley Archaeological Museum is located in Sungai Batu where excavations revealed jetty remains, iron-smelting sites, a clay brick monument dating back to 110 AD, making it the oldest man made structure to be recorded in South East Asia. Relics found in Bujang Valley are on display at the archaeologial museum which include inscribed stone caskets and tablets, metal tools and ornaments, ceramics, pottery and Hindu icons. Victoria Bridge Victoria Bridge is a single track railway, truss bridge located in Karai, Kuala Kangsar District in the state of Perak, Malaysia. It is one of the oldest railway bridges in the country, although it is no longer in use and has been converted into a tourist attraction. Victoria Bridge was named after Queen Victoria, who ruled the United Kingdom from 1837-1901. Victoria Bridge was constructed between December 1897 and March 1900 by the Perak Government Railway as a crossing over the Perak River to serve the local tin mining industry. Spanning the Perak River, the bridge was linked to a railway line to Sungai Siput and Kuala Kangsar and served to transport natural resources from Perai in the north to Singapore in the south for export. The Victoria Bridge remained in use until 2002, when a wider concrete girder bridge was built parallel to the old bridge and which was to take over the role of handling rail traffic. The new bridge is significantly wider, with room to support a second track, but in its early life it was only required to handle a single track until double tracking and electification was conducted between the Ipoh to Padang Besar line during the late-2000s and early-2010s. While the old Victoria Bridge is closed to rail traffic, its adjoining footbridge is still publicly open to motorcycles and pedestrians. Attempts have been made to retain the structure, with occasional maintenance having been conducted on it. The Victoria Bridge has become a tourist attraction, with signage set up to inform visitors about its history. It is a popular spot for photoshoots. In 2016, the bridge was gazetted as a national heritage site.
