Many students learn to read one-syllable words with relatively little difficulty, but they find it much harder to read polysyllabic words (with more than one syllable). This presentation includes (a) an explanation why polysyllabic word reading is difficult based on reading science and (b) easy-to-implement research-based strategies to help students read those long words using information about syllables and morphemes. Devin M. Kearns, Ph.D. is an associate professor of Special Education in the Department of Educational Psychology in the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut (UConn) and a research scientist for Haskins Laboratories and the Center for Behavioral Education & Research. Devin researches reading disabilities—including dyslexia—in elementary- and middle school-age children and designs instructional programs to assist students with reading difficulty. He also studies how to identify the neurobiological effects of reading intervention. He publishes articles for researchers and educators on reading difficulty and helps schools and districts to support implementation of high-quality reading instruction.
