There is so little material available on the internet about South African born Royal Ballet prima ballerina Nadia Nerina, particularly in terms of photographs and film footage, that when I came across this 1965 interview I went into immediate upload mode! The lack of filmed performances was due in part to Dame Margot Fonteyn being Sir Frederick Ashton’s muse, to the choreographic neglect of other ballerinas in the company. The famous exception of course is ‘La Fille mal gardée’ (1960). Margaret Dale did however manage, outside the Royal Ballet, to create a record of many of Nerina’s roles in television productions. As you’ll know perhaps, I’ve put both her 1962 ‘La Fille Mal Gardee’ with David Blair and her 1959 ‘Giselle’ with Nikolai Fadeyechev on my channel. In this interview, Nadia Nerina talks about her early life in South Africa and in particular in ballet. She discusses joining the Royal Ballet, with the choice being an alternative to becoming an actor ‘and playing Lady Macbeth’. The ballerina comes across here as having a strong sense her own mind and a good appreciation for her qualities as a dancer, even to the extent of declaring ‘they did say I was the greatest technician in the West’. Certainly she was the strongest technician at the Royal over in the earlier part of her career. She talks among other things about technique and expression, the importance of music to inspire her best performances and about her favourite roles. Enjoy!
