To get married in South Korea you need to have a civil marriage ceremony. Religious marriage ceremonies are not recognized under South Korean law. Before you can register the marriage in South Korea, you must prove that you are free to marry according to Canadian and South Korean laws. To do so, you must obtain an Affidavit of Eligibility of Marriage from the Embassy of Canada in Seoul or the Consulate of Canada in Busan. To obtain the affidavit you must be present in person and submit a valid identification document. After you obtain the Affidavit, you need to submit it to the appropriate civil authorities, the local district office (Gu Cheong), to report the registration of your marriage. One of the spouses must be a South Korean citizen. However, other marriage requirements may vary.
