Two experimental Republic XF-84H turboprop aircraft were built. Though given the nomenclature of the F-84, these two experimental models were radically different in most ways. An Allison T40 turboprop powered each XF-84H, spinning a broad-chord propeller at supersonic speeds that produced a sound level that was difficult to bear, especially within an arc of the propeller disc. This film, like most flight test film of that era, was silent. Sometimes called the Thunderscreech (traditional F-84s were Thunderjets and Thunderflashes and Thunderstreaks) the two propjets did not lead to production. This rare silent footage includes a view of the Allison T40 engine running in a test stand at Edwards, with the tail of a giant B-36 barely visible in the background. XF-84H number 059 later was placed on display at the Bakersfield, California, air terminal; aircraft number 060 was scrapped. And 059 has since been taken to the National Museum of the United States Air Force at Dayton, Ohio, for restoration and display. Have you subscribed to the Airailimages Channel on YouTube?
