We had an amazing day-hike to Cattail Falls and the Oak Springs Trail, to view the Windows pour over and the sparking falls in the Cattail area. The various springs resulted in bubbling water, deep and clear ponds, and trickling falls. This hike in Big Bend is the most beautiful spot in the park, excluding only the South Rim Overlook (check out our South Rim video if you are interested). The Cattail Falls trail branches off from the Oak Springs Trail and heads south to Cattail Canyon, eventually leading to the secluded oasis and falls. The NPS does not support or maintain the trail and advises visitors to use extreme caution due to slippery surfaces, poison oak, and snakes. Sounds like my kind of trail! The water at Cattail Falls in Big Bend National Park is sourced from Oak Spring, a year-round water source used by the park service to supply water to the Chisos Basin area. Water from Oak spring is captured, stored and pumped up to the basin. The Cattail Falls trail can be accessed via a gravel road off the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive to the trailhead parking area, making the hike we took approximates 6 miles in total. The Park has listed the Oak Springs Trail as demanding and narrow with steep drop offs. You will need to bring plenty of water and head coverings, as the majority of the hike is exposed to direct sunlight. We did this hike in February and it was hot! The canyon drops 2,500 feet in a few miles, with a number of significant pour-offs, often with cold, wet rock and freezing pools if it gets cold enough. Are you over 60? Do you enjoy the great outdoors and want to try backpacking? Wondering if you can? Please be assured you can! If we can do it (mid 60s and overweight) you can do it! Recent statistics and thorough studies have proven that longevity is directly related to how much you move, or stated more succinctly “use it or lose it.” See the article on this topic in the recent issue of Outside Magazine.
