I take a relaxing walk in the Corlea Bog in Ireland near County Longford on a glorious Irish summer's day as. This is a beautiful reclaimed area with multiple walking/cycling tracks laid down and many glorious paths to take. I take one of many paths and will be back for more walks very soon. What is an Irish bog? Raised bogs are discreet, raised, dome-shaped masses of peat occupying former lakes or shallow depressions in the landscape. They occur throughout the midlands of Ireland. Their principal supply of water and nutrients is from rainfall and the substrate is acid peat soil, which can be up to 12m deep. Starting in the 1700s, the raised bogs of Ireland were exploited as a source of cheap fuel. Most of this was cut by hand, and laid in the sun to dry before being burned. At the time of the famine, peat (called 'turf' when cut) was often the only source of fuel available.
