Bengaluru: The critically acclaimed film Santosh*, which premiered at last year's Cannes Film Festival, has been barred from release in India by the Central Board of Film Certification. The film's exploration of themes such as misogyny, Islamophobia, and violence within the Indian police force has drawn the ire of the censor board. Director Sandhya Suri revealed to *The Guardian that the board demanded extensive cuts, so extensive that they would be "impossible to implement." Despite her efforts to comply, Suri stated that making the required cuts would compromise the film's coherence and its original vision. *Santosh*, featuring Shahana Goswami in the lead role, competed for the prestigious Prize of Un Certain Regard at Cannes. In addition to its festival acclaim, the film is also notable for its status as the UK entry for Best International Feature Film at the 97th Oscars, where it made it to the December shortlist. The narrative follows 28-year-old Santosh, who steps into her late husband's role as a police officer to investigate a young girl's murder.
