Why did France take over Algeria? French colonial control in North Africa lasted for over 130 years---a period in which France itself went through enormous change and in which it foisted change on Algerians. But in the eyes of the French, Algeria was no mere imperial possession. Hundreds of thousands of Europeans settled there, and Algeria was treated as a part of France proper until hard-won Algerian independence in 1962.
