Israeli Druze breached the Israel-Syria border fence in the Golan Heights and walked towards Syria on Wednesday (July 16) after local calls to help Druze in Syria after a surge in violence in the neighbouring country. Scores of Israeli Druze broke through a barrier along the border fence, penetrated through the border gate and linked up with Syrian Druze on the Syrian side of the border, a Reuters witness said. Israeli military on the border fired flash bangs and gas canisters to disperse the crowds. Some fires started in the open fields as scores of people walked towards Syria. Dozens of Israeli Druze were standing in the Druze village of Majdal Shams near the border, holding Druze flags and chanting as they looked towards Syria. Israel's military said it struck the entrance to the Syrian defence ministry in Damascus on Wednesday, stepping up attacks on the Islamist-led authorities with the declared aim of protecting the Druze minority from harm by government forces.
