The astonishing feat was indeed a testament of Honnold’s mastery. But the production team’s smooth coordination was what allowed the whole world to witness the event. The production of “Skyscraper Live” is estimated to cost more than NT$250 million, with an army of camera operators hanging on ropes alongside Honnold to capture the live footage. The show’s executive producer praised the setup as perhaps the most sophisticated in the history of broadcasting. Let’s take a closer look. Alex Honnold takes a selfie at 508m above the ground, behind him a bird’s eye view of Taipei. Alex Honnold Rock climber Yeah, I was like, “What a view! It’s incredible! What a beautiful day!” It was very windy, so I was like, “Don’t fall off the spire.” Honnold made history as the first to free solo all the way to the top of Taipei 101. But it also took a dedicated crew to capture the event. A helicopter and a drone circled Honnold throughout the livestream. They were deployed by the Taiwanese organizers to support the Netflix production. It’s also the first time for Taiwan to have a helicopter and a drone in the air simultaneously. The helicopter’s task was to monitor for illegally launched drones, while the drone is the only one with a permit to capture Honnold from all angles. Executive Producer James Smith praised the camera crew’s skillful execution. James Smith ‘Skyscraper Live’ executive producer What we’ve just seen, what enabled us to get those amazing shots is probably the best camera rig I think maybe in broadcasting history. I’ve never seen that many ropes, the skill that went in. Smith, who’s been working with Honnold for over five years, said the camera setup was probably the most sophisticated he’s seen yet. The team scouted the location as early as March last year for all the different setups. There are fixed and mobile rigs, and rope works for the camera operators, which can be seen in this footage. A fixed camera was already awaiting Honnold right by a ruyi ornament, while a mobile rig operator was taken higher up on a rope in a relay. Another camera at more than 500m above ground awaited Honnold at the spire. The entire production cost was estimated to exceed US$8 million, or NT$250 million. The presenters were also seasoned pros, such as Emily Harrington, a professional climber herself. Emily Harrington ‘Skyscaper Live’ presenter I was pretty stressed out. Umm… I had some anxiety. I just… yeah, I didn’t know what to expect. Freesoloing, much like Sanni, it makes me feel a bit uncomfortable to watch it. So yeah, I just had a lot of emotion going on. Other presenters included Mark Rober, a NASA engineer turned popular science content creator; and professional wrestler Seth Rollins. It’s thanks to the whole team’s effort that put Taipei 101 under the world’s spotlight on this historic day.
