Premiered by Russell Scarbrough's SOUL-JAZZ Big Band and the Fairport High School Jazz Ensemble in May 2013. About SKIES OVER FAIRPORT: The groove for this tune is reminiscent of some of those found in the great soul-fusion projects from the 1970's. Listen to some of George Duke's recordings on the MPS label or some of the classic CTI records from that period and you'll get the idea (or even early Earth, Wind and Fire). There was a spirit of earnest and unbounded joy and optimism on some of those recordings, flowing out of the rhythmic groove underlying a melodic and harmonic sophistication. It's a feeling in jazz we rarely get to experience in these later, more self-consciously ironic times. A version for one 18-piece jazz ensemble is also available!
