Some are intellectuals or artists, some have families that have been tortured or killed. The expensive and hazardous journey may take them as far as Germany - or might end in a matter of hours in a Turkish jail... Many Europeans are worried they will be swamped by this human tide of have-nots. One French politician says "We could organise a boat to send them back where they came from."
