In 1951, Evelyn Kennedy – the mother of a young boy with disabilities – was told by the family doctor that she should institutionalize the boy. And then, she should forget she ever had him. Evelyn did not follow that prevailing advice of the day, and instead, joined with a group of 12 parents to start a revolution – ultimately creating the Parents and Friends of Mentally Retarded Children of Bridgeport, Inc., which later renamed itself The Kennedy Center. Now, Evelyn's mission of proving that people with disabilities have value is as strong as ever, and remains the guiding force of The Kennedy Collective – a Connecticut-based non-profit organization that provides Support Services and builds Business Enterprises to empower and employ. After all, when we unite as a collective, our abilities have no bounds.
