Boat: Necky Jive 8'4" Flow: 21.3 m3/s BC whitewater link: https://www.bcwhitewater.org/reaches/... chapter: 0:00 kayak 1:08 swim 2:34 hike up canyon Today, I finally whitewater kayaked the Lynn Creek and I swam. I always wanted to go on this river, and I felt ready after last Sunday's chilliwack canyon run. Today, the Lynn Creek was in a friendly first-timer flow and I found a solid crew to go with, so I went for it. I think the difficulty was similar to Chilliwack Canyon at 1.21m, but Lynn was much shorter - so in a way Lynn was a bit easier I think. Lynn has two major rapids - House Rock and Sky High. In the sky high rapid, I was following people to go down on the river left, but I went off a rock and ended up on the river center. I tried to get back to the river left eddy, but I missed it and went downstream backwards. I capsized just above the major hole that I should avoid. I rolled up at the same time I entered the sky high hole. Everything happened so quickly. I didn't see it but I knew I was in that hole as water was so powerful inside. I got worked in that hole for 10 seconds before I panicked and pulled the skirt. I swam, at the same time my boat and I both got flush out the hole. Eventually, my friend got me back to the right river bank and then ferried me to the left river bank. My boat ended up one big rapid downstream and the best solution for me was hiking up the steep canyon and hiking down to where my boat was. Luckily everything went smoothly after that. This was my first swim on BC rivers since I moved to Canada. Some lessons learned from this experience include 1. Always paying attention to what is downstream of you, not just what your original plan was. Don't just look at people you follow blindly. I didn't realize the river got that narrow at sky high and I was already in the river center. I still tried to get back to the river left eddy, which was an impossible task. 2. Secondly, I pulled the skirt when I was almost out of the hole. I already did two rolls inside the hole and extended my hand to reach my paddle farther downstream to try to pull myself out of the hole. I could definitely hold my breath longer, but I mentally gave up, as I thought I wouldn't be able to get out without swimming. The swimming was much worse than fighting in the hole, as it was hard to breathe without taking in some water in rough water. My fear of this hole also contributed to my early give-up. I first thought this hole was sticky and wouldn't let me go, then 10 second fighting experience validated my belief. I hope I can fight a bit longer next time. Anyway, I am glad that now I have done the Lynn Creek and I will feel more confidence next time on this river. Thanks my crew who rescued me.
