VORTEX FLASH SUPPRESSOR

As I was bringing my Norinco CQ-A 5.56, 10.5 renovation to its conclusion, I made mention to a friend that the last thing I needed was a new flash suppressor. I had a few selections in mind but with the money I had already committed to all the MAGPUL accessories that now adorned my rifle, a flash suppressor would likely have to wait until the next pay cheque rolled around. My friend offered me a spare he had in his tickle trunk of goodies and I was quick to accept his generous offer. From his bag he pulled out a Vortex, G6A2 flash suppressor made by Smith Enterprises. I recognized the design right away as I had seen it proudly displayed on the muzzle of many magazine and website show pieces but that was the extent of my intimate knowledge. I did some research online to see what this little jewel was capable of. If nothing else, the LCF (Look Cool Factor) was more than enough to entice me but in all honesty, I like to have as much information as possible on the kit I use, so I hit the books. This particular model and most of the newer predecessors have been very popular amongst the SOF (Special Operations Force) community. Many users have claimed that it is one of the best flash suppressors on the market, although there are now some tough contenders the Vortex type flash suppressors continue to be a favourite. This particular model is constructed from 8620 steel, RC 55-60 case hardness with RC 35-38 core hardness and is black parkerized as per MIL SPEC. The distinct flute design of the Vortex flash suppressors are angled to 15 degrees and are angled clockwise to allow the burn, discharge and dissipation of gases to eliminate as much of the muzzle flash as possible. Another interesting aspect to the design is that due to the clockwise angle of the flutes, the discharge of gases allow the flash suppressor to self-tighten so the flash suppressor remains solidly fixed during sustained fire. This same aspect is also supposed to allow shooters to acquire tighter groupings although there are many that dispute this claim. I was extremely pleased with how easy it was to install on my Norinco CQ-A 5.56, 10.5. It did not require any additional washers or locking nuts, it simply screwed on and I tightened it with an adjustable wrench. The first time I had it on the range there were two things that surprised me about my Vortex flash suppressor. Despite my decent groupings from the 15, 20 and 25 yard line, it felt like I was experiencing a slight muzzle rise that I did not experience with the factory bird-cage design that came factory installed, and I thought I could hear a distinct ringing after discharging each shot. I'll have to get some more range time to properly identify if I am indeed experiencing muzzle rise as a result of this flash suppressor but as for the ringing, I was most certainly not imagining it. Some more research revealed that this is indicative of Vortex flash suppressors as a result of the flutes acting like tuning forks. I reviewed a few short video clips of me firing at the range and you could hear the ring as each round discharged. Research also showed that many shooters are annoyed and distracted by the ringing but as for myself, once I realized what was causing it I really gave no more thought to it. I think I actually like it. Would I recommend this particular piece of kit? Hell yes! This, like many items out there will ultimately boil down to personal preference. I will likely try out some other designs but as for now, I'm extremely happy with its performance. For anyone considering purchasing one of these flash suppressors, they typically retail for between $60 to $80 which is pretty fair compared to some on the market right now. In the meantime, I plan on getting as many rounds out the end of this flash suppressor as I can.
