I didn't really know this piece until I taught it recently. It's a fine example of Beethovenian drama on a small scale, with the striking contrast between the two halves ('lustig' means happy, 'traurig' means sad). It probably dates from the 1790s, so a relatively early work, but was first published a hundred years later. Although my pupil wasn't learning it for exam purposes, I see that it was a grade 4 piece for ABRSM in 2019-20. A nice discovery for me and because it's not particularly well-known, I thought I would record it. Actually I haven't listened to any other performances (other than my pupil's) so I hope it's not too eccentric!
