He was the second Chhatrapati of the Maratha Empire and the eldest son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He ascended the throne after his father’s death in 1681 and ruled for nearly nine years. Known for his bravery, military skills, and administrative abilities, he played a crucial role in defending the Maratha Empire against the Mughal Empire, particularly against Emperor Aurangzeb. He faced internal conflicts within the Maratha court after Shivaji’s death. Despite opposition, he took charge of the empire in 1681. Aurangzeb launched an aggressive campaign to capture the Deccan, but Sambhaji resisted fiercely. He led several attacks against the Mughals, Portuguese, and Siddis. Inspite of his incomparable warrior quality, he was notorious for his violent temper and self-indulgent character, as uphold by the eminent historians. He had lust for Maratha Empire, and for this reason he went against his father, Chhatrapati Shivaji. He was behind the bar twice by his father. It was also reported that his stepmother was put to death by his order in the name of dominating the conspirators. But he was heroic on the stage of death in front of Aurangzib. Betrayed and captured by Mughal forces in February 1689. Aurangzeb tried to convert him to Islam, but he refused.He was brutally tortured and executed on 11 March 1689, Becoming a symbol of sacrifice and resistance. Sambhaji Maharaj is remembered for his unwavering courage and devotion to the Maratha cause. His sacrifice inspired future Maratha leaders like Rajaram Maharaj and Tarabai to continue the fight against the Mughal Empire, though he was not fit for ruling the empire, says Savarkar.
