We spent two weeks in the historic city center of Campeche, Mexico in the Yucatan Peninsula. Campeche is one of the oldest cities in Mexico, founded in 1540 by the Spanish conquistadors and is known for its impressive wall, which surrounds the city. The walls were built in the 17th century to protect the city from pirate attacks. Inside the old walled city, there is a street that crosses it right in the middle, the same street that was responsible for joining the sea (Puerta de Mar) and the land (Puerta de Tierra): Calle 59. No cars are allowed on this street, which makes it ideal for foot traffic and many outdoor restaurants. We enjoyed walking the cobblestone streets and admiring the colonial architecture of the buildings. The walled city has several monuments and historical buildings that are a real gem. Also in the historic center is the Independence Square - Plaza de la Independencia. This square attracts many visitors and is also used for entertainment, where one evening we were treated to a wonderful brass band playing for the crowd. Just next to the square is the main cathedral - Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Inmaculada Concepción, Santa Iglesia Catedral. Not to be missed is the Malecón de Campeche, the waterfront promenade studded with more monuments, popular for walking, cycling & sunset views. Almost every night, there is a water fountain show to music with beautiful lighting- Fuentes Marinas Campeche. Big difference in shows on a calm night vs a windy night. We were blessed to be in town during the Campeche Carnival, celebrating its 443rd anniversary, is one of the oldest and most emblematic in Mexico. From February 20 to March 4, 2025, the city of Campeche turned into the epicenter of a party that combined tradition, solidarity and unforgettable shows. People lined the street next to the Malecón for over 3.5k, enjoying music, dance and ending with a parade. Travel tip: Uber is not available in Campeche, but the InDrive ride sharing app is available.
