Mining operations in Almaden trace their roots back to 1845, when Mexican Cavalry Officer Captain Andrés Castillero laid claim to the area. While experimenting with the striking red rock, Castillero discovered it was rich in cinnabar—the ore from which mercury is extracted. Mercury played a crucial role in processing precious metals such as gold and silver. Before its discovery in California, all mercury had to be imported from Almaden, Spain. This local find transformed the region’s mining industry, accelerating the extraction of gold and silver during California’s early boom years. Our bike ride through this historic site spanned about six to seven miles of leisurely exploration. The trail wound through one of San Jose’s hidden gems, offering sweeping hillside vistas and serene stretches shaded by towering canopies of oak and sycamore. Rated as a moderate route, it featured a few gentle inclines that added just the right touch of challenge. The combination of scenic beauty and deep-rooted history made this ride especially rewarding—a perfect blend of nature, discovery, and the echoes of California’s mining past. #bike #ebike #bikelover #mtb #cycling #mountainbike #bicycle #hikingtrails #hiking #travel #traillife #trailhiking #bike #bikepaths #bikeroutes #bicycling #bayarea #southbay #sanjose #sanjoseca #picnic #picnicspot #outdoors #almadenquicksilver #mining #mercury Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?...
