SHORT PANEL CONCRETE (SPC) Pavement, or Short Paneled Concrete Pavement (SPCP), is an innovative, durable, and cost-effective pavement technology designed for high-volume roads, urban streets, and, in some cases, residential/commercial flooring. Unlike traditional Jointed Plain Concrete Pavements (JPCP) with large slabs (e.g., 3.5m x 4.5m), SPCP utilizes much smaller, typically square panels ranging from 1m x 1m to 2m x 2m, with thicknesses often reduced to 180-220 mm. FEATURE and BENEFIT : REDUCED STRESSES: The small panel size significantly reduces curling and thermal stresses compared to conventional, larger slabs. COST EFFECTIVE & SUSTAINABLE : By reducing the slab thickness and eliminating the need for dowel bars in transverse joints (load transfer is achieved through aggregate interlocking), the overall cost of construction is significantly lower than conventional concrete pavements. HIGH DURABILITY : SPCP is designed to be very durable, especially in areas with poor drainage, as it forms a rigid surface that resists environmental damage. -CONSTUCTION PROCESS : Panels are typically formed by creating vertical saw-cuts (1/4th to 1/3rd of the thickness) within 8 to 16 hours of concrete placement. -APPLICATION : It is commonly used for highway construction, urban roads, and in "white topping" (an overlay on existing bituminous pavements). SPCP in ROAD CONSTRUCTION : STRUCTURE : Typically includes a Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) layer (M40 grade) over a Dry Lean Concrete (DLC) base and granular sub-base. PERFORMANCE :SPCP has shown to have superior performance compared to traditional methods in terms of resisting rutting, particularly in hot climates with heavy truckloads.
