The loss of a guinea pig affects not only us as owners but guinea pigs too. This video explains how guinea pigs can grieve the death of a cage mate, sometimes with devastating consequences. I cover what we might notice when our guinea pigs are grieving, what we should do to help and monitor them, and when it might be time to get another cage mate. A summary of what we can do to help guinea pigs recover from the loss of a cage mate: Give the piggy/s the chance to say goodbye by returning the body of their lost friend to the cage temporarily. Most will ignore the body, but some may groom their lost cage mate. Monitor your piggies' weight - even in a group one may become depressed and loose weight. Clean the cage, change the layout and even the location. If he/she/they are outdoor piggies, bring them indoors if possible. This is not about making them forget, but giving them new focus whilst they recover. Spend more time with them. Not only does this give them some company but allows us to monitor them and gives us comfort in bonding with our piggies, whilst we grieve the loss of a dear friend. Cuddling them during laptime and hand feeding their veggie treats are a great way of doing this. When the time is right, get them a new cage mate - by adopting you can give a wonderful rescue guinea the loving home he/she deserves. Please do share your own experiences below so others can read. Losing a piggie is very difficult and all loving owners dread when that time comes to say goodbye, whether expected or out of the blue. If you are reading this and you have recently lost a piggy my heart goes out to you - I am so sorry for your loss.
